Chaplaincy at St Michael’s Catholic Academy

The support offered by the Chaplaincy at St Michael’s Catholic Academy should reflect and echo the School Vision. By becoming a member of a Catholic School we all become members of the Chaplaincy team and will endeavour to work in close collaboration with the Chaplain and Pastoral Leaders to ensure the spiritual and moral development of our students and all in our community. Just as Jesus walked alongside the disciples on the road to Emmaus, so key members of the Chaplaincy Team walk alongside those whom they meet in the course of their work. At times our young people will be challenged by providing opportunities to develop a more mature and responsible faith. All members of this Catholic Community share with them, offering them understanding, a listening ear and words of encouragement.

Purpose

The aim of the Chaplaincy is to encourage the whole school community to grow in the love of God and in the love of our neighbour, through the Person of Jesus Christ who said ‘I have come that they may have life and have it to the full’. [John 10:10]

St Michael’s Catholic Academy hopes to do this by nurturing the faith development of all members of the community and especially the young people:

through opportunities for Spiritual Growth
through Christian Concern
through Pastoral Care

Such an approach bears fruit for individuals both within the school community and beyond. The St Michael’s Chaplaincy seeks to develop a collaborative style of ministry which brings together into partnership people, who through their baptism, have different vocations and gifts to offer. A Lay Chaplaincy (Rachel Paterson) is our key person. The Lay Chaplain co-ordinates the spiritual life of the school through the Chaplaincy Forum. This Forum meets on a Wednesday lunchtime fortnightly, unless a meeting with the priests means it needs to take place after school, and the purpose will be to discuss, plan and share ideas. The whole school community is invited to be involved whether it be in a permanent or temporary capacity. The representatives at each forum may be permanent or temporary depending on the agenda but will be from:

Responsibilities of the Chaplain

Spiritual Development
A Visible Presence
Christian Concern
To facilitate the use of the Chapel and support more use of this as a reflective area available at all times during the school day
To provide resources to support staff with Morning Prayer
To co-ordinate the work of others in the preparation of School Liturgy
To communicate with the deanery priests for the weekly Mass
To communicate with the deanery priests for Services of Reconciliation
To organise and co-ordinate Retreats for each year group
To assist in the formation of Prayer Groups
To raise awareness in the school community about areas of Christian concern
To work with pastoral Teams in supporting Charity Fund raising events.
To assist and oversee the formation of Christian Concern groups within the school, e.g. CAFOD, LIFE, SVP, Fair Trade, Justice and Peace
To enable members of these groups to develop their spirituality and sense of Christian responsibility
To support the sacramental programmes taking place in the Parishes
To provide opportunities for students to attend diocesan events e.g Annual Youth Festival
